This content is for general information and does not replace diagnosis or individual medical advice. Serious or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent medical assessment.

Transferring a traveller with limited mobility from a hotel to the airport can require more than booking a suitable vehicle. The route from the hotel room to the entrance, lifts or stairs, transfer-chair needs and long terminal walking distances should be considered in advance.

Information that makes coordination easier

When wheelchair or special assistance is requested from the airline early, the terminal process is usually easier to coordinate. The assistance level may depend on whether the passenger can walk short distances, use stairs or is fully wheelchair dependent.

Safe assessment and the next step

A clinically stable passenger who still requires monitoring during transfer may benefit from nurse or paramedic accompaniment. Ground ambulance may be more appropriate when the medical need is higher.

If a personal wheelchair, powered mobility device or other equipment will travel with the passenger, airline size, battery and baggage rules should be checked before departure.

Medicines, medical reports and essential supplies should remain in accessible hand luggage. Water, food and toilet requirements during long airport waits should also be included in the plan.

If Fit-to-Fly or MEDIF documentation is required, it should be completed and airline acceptance confirmed before transfer day.
