MEDIF and Fit-to-Fly are often mentioned together, but they serve different purposes. Fit-to-Fly generally refers to a physician’s clinical opinion or certificate that a passenger is medically suitable for air travel. MEDIF is an airline-specific medical information form used by many carriers when a passenger has a medical condition or requires special assistance.

Information that makes coordination easier

A passenger may be clinically fit to travel and still need a MEDIF because oxygen, a stretcher, medical escort or another special arrangement is requested. Conversely, completion of a form alone does not mean a passenger is safe to fly under all circumstances. Current clinical assessment remains essential.

Safe assessment and the next step

MEDIF forms commonly ask about diagnosis, clinical stability, infectious risk, mobility, oxygen or equipment needs, escort requirements and the anticipated level of care during travel. Some sections may be completed by the passenger and others by a physician. The airline’s own current form should be used whenever required.

For a patient returning home after hospital or clinic care in Istanbul, the workflow usually starts with collecting current medical records, reviewing the route, identifying the carrier’s requirements and arranging physician completion of Fit-to-Fly or MEDIF documentation when appropriate.

Wheelchair support, onboard oxygen, medical escort and ambulance transfer are separate operational needs and may require additional airline approval. They should be planned alongside the documentation rather than after it.

Useful starting information includes the flight date and number, PNR, passport, current diagnosis, discharge summary, medication list, mobility status, oxygen requirement and the destination handover plan.
