After a recent fracture or cast application, flight planning should consider the location of the injury, when the cast was applied, swelling, pain control and the passenger’s mobility. Prolonged immobility can add further considerations on longer journeys.
Information that makes coordination easier
Some airlines have additional requirements for a recently applied full cast or may request that it is adjusted before travel. Rules vary by carrier, so the airline should be informed early with the booking and travel schedule.
Safe assessment and the next step
Clinical assessment may include circulation, sensation, pain, swelling and fracture stability. Recent imaging or an orthopaedic note can be useful. If a Fit-to-Fly certificate is requested, the current condition and any travel limitations should be documented clearly.
Wheelchair support, seating arrangements that accommodate the injured limb, medical escort or an airport ambulance handover may need to be planned separately according to clinical and operational needs.
Increasing pain inside the cast, marked colour change, numbness, coldness, uncontrolled swelling or new shortness of breath requires prompt medical assessment before travel.
Prepare the fracture report, date of treatment, current medicines, mobility status, airline/PNR details and the destination transport plan to support efficient coordination.
Medi Guest Istanbul can coordinate Fit-to-Fly assessment, airline medical documentation and transfers for passengers flying from Istanbul after a fracture or cast.
