This content is for general information and does not replace diagnosis or individual medical advice. Serious or rapidly worsening symptoms require urgent medical assessment.

A Fit-to-Fly certificate documents a physician’s assessment of whether a passenger is medically suitable to travel by air at that point in time. Airlines may request medical information after a recent illness, operation, hospital admission, injury or significant mobility limitation. Medi Guest Istanbul can coordinate physician assessment for international guests in Istanbul and, when clinically appropriate, preparation of a Fit-to-Fly certificate.

Information that makes coordination easier

Issuing a certificate requires more than the flight date. The physician may consider the current diagnosis, recent procedures or treatment, vital signs, mobility, oxygen needs, medicines and expected flight duration. Recent discharge summaries, laboratory results or imaging reports may also be relevant. If the clinical assessment indicates that flying is unsafe, the priority is appropriate medical care rather than producing a clearance document.

Safe assessment and the next step

Airline documentation requirements vary. Some carriers may accept a physician letter, while others require their own MEDIF or medical-clearance form. Sharing the airline, booking reference, travel date, connections and any special-assistance request early helps the coordination team identify the correct documentation pathway.

A Fit-to-Fly certificate does not replace operational arrangements such as wheelchair assistance, oxygen, medical escort, extra seating or ground ambulance transfer. These needs may require separate airline approval and planning. Final acceptance for boarding remains with the airline.

If the passenger’s condition changes after a certificate is prepared, reassessment may be necessary. New fever, shortness of breath, chest pain, altered consciousness, active bleeding, significant vomiting or diarrhea, or rapid deterioration should trigger prompt clinical review.

To make assessment more efficient, prepare passport details, flight/PNR information, treatment summary, current medication list, allergies, date of the latest procedure, treating-clinic details and any requested special assistance.
