Long flights after surgery may require additional assessment for venous thromboembolism because of prolonged immobility. Risk is not determined by flight duration alone; the type and timing of surgery, age, previous clot history, cancer, obesity, hormone use and mobility may all be relevant.
Information that makes coordination easier
Generic internet advice cannot replace individual risk assessment. The treating surgeon or appropriate physician should advise when travel is reasonable and whether preventive measures are needed. Prescription anticoagulants should not be started, stopped or changed without clinical guidance.
Safe assessment and the next step
The travel plan may include movement during the flight, hydration, compression stockings or additional mobility support when recommended by the treating team. Passengers with significant mobility limitation may also require wheelchair assistance or a medical escort.
One-sided leg swelling or pain, new chest pain, sudden breathlessness, fainting or unexplained marked tachycardia requires urgent medical evaluation rather than proceeding to the airport.
For a Fit-to-Fly review, prepare the operative/discharge summary, procedure date, current medicines, any history of thrombosis and return-flight details.
Follow-up at the destination, continuity of medicines and transfer from the arrival airport should also be clarified before departure.
Medi Guest Istanbul can coordinate physician review, Fit-to-Fly documentation, medical escort and airport transfer after surgery in Istanbul.
